Drawn State

Blogging on architecture, design and other quirky building-related things on the web

Cheerio

As regular followers of my Twitter feed will no doubt be aware, I am off to bigger and (hopefully) better things. I’m moving to New York for 90 days to find someone to employ me, so regretfully I will be retiring Drawn State as of today. I hope you’ve enjoyed my updates for the past year or so, and if you’re a reader of Building my articles for the past 139 issues. My own highlights? Travelling to Djibouti with Osama Bin Laden’s nephew, discussing the Gherkin at its top floor restaurant with its architects, joining the Army for a weekend, sailing round the Isle of Wight, meeting the community of the Lower 9th ward in New Orleans, having coffee in Jerusalem with five dispossessed Palestinians, and sharing a beer with Norman Foster in a Barcelona bar. I’ve received angry e-mails from Frank Gehry and Richard Rogers, and interviewed Renzo Piano on the top floor of Tate Modern. I had ice-cream while discussing global warming with Nigel Lawson, watched Peter Hain read out worker fatality figures from a cheat sheet and caused Ed Vaizey to say “oh fuck” and slap his forehead. I literally bumped into Gordon Brown at the Labour Party Conference. I was on Sky TV talking about a collapsed building, BBC 3 talking about the Candy brothers and Radio Derby talking about JCBs. I’ve drunk champagne in Paris, Barcelona, Cannes and Clerkenwell, and I only vomited once, in a wastepaper basket in the office of a Stirling Prize-winning architect. It was Grimshaws. I haven’t spoken to them since. To conclude: it’s been a great two years and seven months, and thank you all for reading.

I will be continuing my adventures at the end of September at http://90daysinny.blogspot.com/ so please add it to your favourites now!
